Jennifer Gilbert, DO
How many children do you have? I have three-month-old twins.
What is your specialty? I’m an ob-gyn.
What’s your favorite parenting tip? When you’re frustrated and exhausted, try to remember that this is only temporary. The baby phase especially is tough, but you’ll get through it. Set small goals for yourself, and once you achieve them, it helps you move on to the next one. It gets better!
What has surprised you most about parenting? How much you love your children but also that it’s so much work—way more than I ever thought it would be. It’s so demanding. But it’s all so worth it. When they smile or giggle, it melts my heart.
How do you get your kids to eat healthy food? My twins are only three-months-old, and I decided not to nurse because it would have been too much for me with twins. I felt a tremendous amount of guilt about that, but I think you have to do what works for you.
We give our babies the same formula they were given in the hospital, figuring that they were tolerating it well. But it’s good to know that there are many types of formula, so if your baby is fussy, you can always try a different formula.
How do you recharge your batteries? I keep up with my friends and talk with other moms. This helps me feel better overall and helps me feel focused and relaxed. Also, at least once a month we go away as a family. This helps us to leave the stress of work behind and enjoy time together. I also have a helpful husband, and I always thank him for that.
