Tanya Douglas Holland, MD
Dr. Holland is a mom of a two-year-old daughter, a women’s health advocate, and a consultant in medical affairs to a pharmaceutical company, in Atlanta, GA.
What’s your specialty? My training is in Medical Epidemiology, and I am also currently pursuing my Master’s in Public Health. I have a special interest in Women’s Health. Using my personal story, my mission is to empower women to DO LESS. BE MORE. LIVE WELL. I want women to make their health a priority, not an afterthought.
What’s your favorite parenting tip? Never underestimate how in tune your children are with you. Even when they are little, they are very insightful and emotionally connected with how their parents (particularly mommy) are feeling.
What has surprised you most about parenting? I never realized how much physical and emotional energy I would extend as a parent. There are so many rewards and challenges to parenthood, but I don’t really think you appreciate the full extent of what it entails until you experience it.
Additionally, when I was growing up, many older people use to tell me, “This hurts me more than it hurts you;” I now have a true appreciation for this statement. As a mother, sometimes it hurts me to deny my daughter something or make her do something she may not want to (e.g. eating her veggies, taking a nap), but I know in the long run she will benefit.
How do you get your kids to eat healthy food? This is definitely a challenge. My daughter is very head strong, and she knows what she likes and doesn’t like. She is a very picky eater.
I try to give my daughter healthy foods that she likes, such as applesauce and yogurt, however I have had to get a little creative in getting her to eat other vegetables. I have actually tried Jessica Seinfeld’s spinach brownie recipe, which she enjoyed. I also give her things like Veggie Wedges (e.g. carrot fries) which she likes.
My daughter is a fan of the Dr. Seuss book Green Eggs & Ham. I often use that book to encourage her to try new things.
“Try it. You might like it,” I tell her.
How do you work exercise into your family’s life? I am very big on exercise. My daughter loves to be outdoors, so we enjoy going for walks and getting her outdoors whenever possible.
She also loves to dance, so sometimes we will dance together to get the blood flowing. She and I also like walking in the mall and playing at the Tot Lot in the mall.
How do you recharge your batteries? I love cardio! It really helps me feel better. It helps me sleep better and improves my mood. I try to incorporate a minimum of 30 minutes of cardio five days a week. I try to keep it simple; most days I hop on my Elliptical machine, however when the weather is nice, I enjoy walks outside. I also enjoy a nice cup of tea, such as chamomile and lavender, writing in my journal, listening to music, doing Karoke, and reading daily devotionals.
