Debra Luftman, MD

Dr. Luftman is a mom of a teenage daughter and a teenage son, a board-certified dermatologist in private practice, coauthor of The Beauty Prescription, developer of the skincare line of products Therapeutix, and a clinical instructor of skin surgery and general dermatology at UCLA.

How many children do you have? I have a 19-year-old daughter who just started college and a 16-year-old son.

What’s your specialty? I’m a dermatologist.

What’s your favorite parenting tip? Remember that you’re the parent. This is especially important when your kids become teenagers.

What has surprised you most about parenting? How difficult it is. I’ve had hard jobs in my life, but parenting is the hardest job there is.

How do you get your kids to eat healthy food? I’m successful with one of my kids with healthy eating, not so much with the other one. I didn’t give them candy or sweets until they were around five years old. I think it’s caught up with us now, but even today they don’t have big sweet tooths.

How do you work exercise into your family’s life? I show my kids by example that exercise is a part of my life so that they’ll make it a part of their lives.

How do you recharge your batteries? I take long walks with my golden retriever. Animals are great relaxers. I also like to read.

Dr. Luftman’s Q&As

I’m fortunate to have several hospitals in my insurance plan from which to choose. What did you consider when choosing the hospital or birth center to deliver at?
