What has surprised you most about parenting? Before your baby is born, everyone tells you that your life is going to change. But you have no idea how much! Once you have kids, there’s no more dashing anywhere. Everything takes so much longer.
I was also completely unprepared for how amazing the experience would be, and how cool my son was going to be, and how much I would enjoy him!
How do you get your kids to eat healthy food? My husband and I try be good role models by making healthy choices. We love food and have tried to get our son to learn to enjoy different flavors and textures. We eat lots of vegetables and whole grains, and we try to avoid having potato chips and other prepared snack foods in the house. We have encouraged him to eat the same foods we eat, and now he will eat almost anything. We’ve been really lucky so far. I’m not sure what will happen once he starts school, though.
How do you work exercise into your family’s life? I don’t take care of myself like I used to. I used to exercise but now I have no time. I need to do better at this! When the weather and the daylight permit, my husband, son and I like to walk to the park and play after work. That gives us good time together and gets us some exercise and outside time. I got a new bike at the end of last summer, and now that my son is a little older, I’m hopeful that we’ll get to go on bike rides this spring.
How do you recharge your batteries? All moms are busy, but I really don’t feel like I have a handle on my life right now. I need to make time for exercise and sleep. I am in a book club with a great group of women, so that’s been a huge help to me.
