What’s your favorite parenting tip? Every phase is temporary, and you’ll find wonderful and horrible things about each one. Each stage brings new challenges—and new joys.

What has surprised you most about parenting? How truly different each child is: in their likes and dislike and in the way they develop. They really can’t be compared.

Also, I never thought I would want to have more than two kids. A big family was not in the plan, but after we had our second baby, it didn’t feel like we were done. Our fourth is due in a few weeks, and now we are done.

How do you get your kids to eat healthy food? We get the kids involved in growing our own food. Also we buy produce from a community supported agriculture program. We go to the farm and see the food growing and the cows grazing. My kids are much more interested and engaged in that than a trip to the grocery store!

How do you work exercise into your family’s life? I send them outside to the yard to play.

How do you recharge your batteries? I keep bedtime as consistent as possible so that I have an hour or so to relax or take a warm bath.
