How many children do you have? I have two sons, ages 14 and 11.
What’s your specialty? I’m a pediatrician.
What’s your favorite parenting tip? Avoid sleep issues by getting your baby used to sleeping in his own bed. It they can be sleep trained by four months old, you could avoid a whole year of sleep problems.
What has surprised you most about parenting? That luckily it seems to come pretty naturally to me. I don’t mean to say that it is easy, because it’s not! But by using common sense, for the most part, it does seem to be a role I have adapted to pretty well.
How do you get your kids to eat healthy food? I try hard to give them well balanced meals, and if we don’t get one, we make sure to eat really well at the next meal. We do have chips and cookies in our house, but we are careful to use good portion control. We try to avoid soda as much as we can. It also helps that we plant a garden every summer and get the kids involved in working in it. There is no better food to eat than vegetables picked fresh from your own backyard!
How do you work exercise into your family’s life? My husband and I are both active, and our boys are both active in sports. Our philosophy is, if it’s sunny and nice, you need to play outside. We limit our sons’ TV and computer time to an hour each day, combined.
How do you recharge your batteries? Last summer, I had some back issues and physically felt terrible. I decided I had to get back into shape, and so I started to run. That’s my downtime. Also, I like to play music with my husband. I play guitar and flute, and we play with a neighborhood group. Each year we have a summer party that we play at.
