Our Mommy MD Guide’s reply: When my daughters have tantrums, I try to remain patient and calm and follow the rules. For example, if one of my daughters wants to watch TV, she might cry and scream and leave the room. I kindly tell her that is not time to watch TV. I say it only one time in a calm voice. (If you get angry, you lose.) For example, “Sweetheart, it is not time for TV; it is time for dinner.” A little while later, she’ll come back and say, “I love you, Mommy.”
If you follow the rules, don’t let yourself feel guilty, act naturally, and continue doing what you are doing, they notice you are just not going to pay attention to the tantrum. It all works out.
