Transitions

My daughter is in 2nd grade, and she has a hard time transitioning between school and home. How do you help your kids with this?

Our Mommy MD Guide’s reply: When your children come home from school—whether that’s preschool, elementary school, middle school, or high school—it takes about a one- to two-hour transformation period for them to become “your children” again.

All day long in school, they have been bombarded with information. As adults, when we go to work, we spend 90 percent of our time doing things that we know how to do. We know what we’re expected to do, and we do it. Kids, however, are challenged all day every day to learn new things. Plus their bodies are changing. They also have all sorts of stresses, such as struggling in class, not being chosen for a team, and not being invited to a party.

When a kid comes home from school and is greeted by “Go clean your room,” it’s not going to go well. Instead, give your kids a few hours to de-stress. Find out what helps them to ease back into home life, and then encourage them to do that. For some kids, it might be having a cup of tea and a snack. For others, it might be time to ride a bike or go to a gym. Then they’ll be ready to talk to you and share their day’s experiences with you, and accept a request you may have of them.

Kids Natural Calm Multi

“Today, many kids are missing key ingredients from their diets. For example, one critical mineral is magnesium. I give magnesium to one of my sons daily, because he has my hyperactive nature and it helps him stay focused,” says Rallie McAllister, MD, MPH, MSEH, a mom of three sons, a nationally known health expert, and our resident Mommy MD Guide. “One multi that’s made just for kids is Kids Natural Calm Multi. In addition to essential vitamins and minerals, it also includes omega-3 fatty acids, which are key for brain and nervous system development.”

You can buy Kids Natural Calm Multi online for around $20. It’s for kids ages four and up.
