Sharon Reed Abboud

Sharon is the author of All Moms Work, Short-Term Career Strategies for Long-Range Success, a book about work options for moms, whether they want to work full-time, part-time, telecommute, or start a business. All Moms Work is also written for stay-at-home moms who want to keep their career in progression while they are at home by networking, volunteering, and/or consulting. It is also a guide for stay-at-home moms who are ready to transition back to work.

How many children do you have?  I have four children, ages 17, 15, 13, and 11.

How did you come up with the idea for your book?  I was working in journalism prior to having my first child and then became a stay-at-home parent and freelance writer. Many of the moms in my neighborhood were also stay-at-home moms when their children were very young and then started going back to work when their children entered elementary school. I noticed that many of those moms didn’t go back to work full-time, however. A large number of them started businesses, obtained part-time positions, started telecommuting from home, or found full-time jobs with flexible hours. I researched this phenomenon and found that it was happening across the country. I decided to write All Moms Work about work options and career strategies for moms. I interviewed many career experts and working moms in many types of careers and included their advice and inspirational stories in the book.

What is your favorite parenting tip?  It is important to spend as much time as you can with your children and create many shared memories.

What has surprised you most about parenting?  We have all heard the cliché about how they grow up so fast, but it is true!

How do you get your kids to eat healthy food?  While two of my children have always enjoyed eating healthy food, the other two kids are more reluctant. Since I have older children, I often have to just remind them of the importance of eating healthy food for their own health.

How do you get your family to exercise?  We are an active family and enjoy swimming, bike riding, and ice skating. The kids are involved in organized sports.

How do you recharge your own batteries? I like to take some time to myself to read a good book!
