Vanessa is a mom, a doula, a writer, and the founder of Natural Family Today, an online magazine for natural-minded families.
How many children do you have? I have three boys, ages five and two years and nine months.
How did you come up with the idea for your company? As my own family began making more alternative choices, I saw the need for a place where I could write about natural family issues without worrying about being politically correct. I opened this platform up to various other writers, natural families, and experts so that they could share their voice and opinions about natural living and parenthood as well.
What has surprised you most about parenting? Nothing can prepare you for the incredible amount of sacrifice and patience that parenting takes, but it’s all worth it.
How do you get your kids to eat healthy food? I try to offer as much choice and variety as possible, and not push it. Eventually they try a new healthy food and you celebrate. You don’t like every healthy choice, so don’t expect your kids to like everything. Also, it takes time to get used to the new choices if they are used to eating unhealthy foods.
How do you work exercise into your family’s life? We try to work activity into our everyday lives. We walk to the park, play ball in the backyard, ride bikes together, and we really enjoy moving our bodies and playing on the Wii game console.
How do you recharge your batteries? I love to wind down with some essential oils in a hot bath, followed by a good book that I read until I can’t keep my eyes open any longer.
