How many children do you have and what age groups? I have two adult children, a daughter 25 and a son 22.

What’s your favorite parenting tip? Catch them being good. (By catching good behavior and reinforcing it with heartfelt praise, you assure it will happen again and again.)

What has surprised you most about parenting? The unpredictable ways your children develop, even after they have left the nest.

How did you get your children to eat healthy food? I got my children to eat healthily by making up silly names for things, like broccoli trees, and Mickey Mouse pancakes (really easy to make with one big circle and two smaller ones). They were so distracted they never knew everything was organic and whole grain. I didn’t make them eat things they didn’t like, but I did ask that they try everything.

Another trick was to use a technique from clinical hypnosis: I would plant the idea that as they grew bigger their tastes would change and they would like foods they thought were yucky now. They both eat everything and are quite passionate about cooking from scratch with super healthy, local ingredients.

How do you get your family to exercise? As for exercise, I have been athletic my entire adult life. I was a long distance swimmer for 25 years, while my kids were growing up; and, have had a daily yoga practice for the past ten. When the children were at home, up until high school, we would all go hiking.

How do you recharge your batteries? Historically, exercise has always been a reliable way for me to recharge my batteries. Walking in Delaware Park, amidst the changing seasons, has nurtured my spirit for more than 20 years.

These days, I also find a little poetry goes a long way in helping me slow down; but, dark chocolate still ranks number one in the relaxation department.
